The AM Period

AM covers the time from midnight (12:00am) through the morning and early afternoon until noon (11:59am). This 12-hour window begins at midnight and ends just before noon. The AM period includes early morning hours from 1:00am to 8:59am and late morning hours from 9:00am to 11:59am. The transition from AM to PM occurs at noon, precisely at 12:00pm.

The PM Period

PM covers the time from noon (12:00pm) through the afternoon and evening until midnight (11:59pm). This second 12-hour period represents the afternoon, evening, and early night hours. The PM period includes the noon hour from 12:00pm to 12:59pm, afternoon hours from 1:00pm to 5:59pm, and evening and night hours from 6:00pm to 11:59pm. At midnight, the cycle resets and returns to 12:00am AM.

Why 12-Hour Format Uses Noon and Midnight

The potentially confusing aspect of 12-hour time is that both noon and midnight are labeled as '12.' Midnight is 12:00am (the start of the day), while noon is 12:00pm (midday). Global Usage of 12-Hour vs 24-Hour Time

Most other countries worldwide, including European nations, use the 24-hour format (also called military time), which runs from 00:00 to 23:59 and eliminates the need for AM/PM. The 24-hour format is also standard in scientific, military, aviation, and medical fields globally.

Converting to 24-Hour Format

To convert 12-hour to 24-hour time: AM times stay the same except 12am becomes 00:00. PM times add 12 hours (except 12pm stays 12), so 3:00pm becomes 15:00. This is why the 24-hour format is considered more precise and less prone to confusion in professional settings.
