Breeding Requirements

To successfully breed villagers in Minecraft, you must create specific conditions in the game. Each villager requires access to a bed and a composter to consider breeding viable. These blocks can be placed on any surface near the villagers and don't require any special setup. Even a simple arrangement with beds and composters placed close together will enable breeding once other conditions are met.

Making Villagers Willing

Villagers must be in a state of "willingness" to breed. You can achieve this by giving them food items. The best options are bread (3 loaves), potatoes (12 raw), or carrots (12). Throw these items near the villagers, and they will eat them automatically. Once they have consumed enough food, they enter love mode, indicated by red heart particles appearing above their heads and continuing to appear periodically.

The Breeding Process

Once two villagers are willing and in close proximity to each other, they will breed within 5 to 10 minutes. A baby villager will spawn nearby, typically at a random location between the parents. The baby villager takes 20 in-game days to fully mature into an adult capable of working and breeding. During maturation, the baby follows adult villagers and gradually grows until ready for independence.

Breeding Farm Setup

Many players create dedicated breeding farms using doors, pressure plates, and automated food dispensers. Advanced setups use hoppers and dispensers to automatically feed villagers, creating a fully automated breeding system. These farms are useful for creating specific professions needed for a settlement or for generating trading partners and expanding village populations efficiently.
